SIX SIGMA is a strong project-oriented approach (DMAIC roadmap), which solves chronic problems with a focus a priori on customer satisfaction. Although manuals will tell you that Six Sigma is about increasing quality level (ie. reducing 'defects'), it is essentially about process stability and reducing variation, often in support of a Lean Journey.

While Lean rather has a helicopter view of a company or business unit, Six Sigma is at its best to address specific problems in processes (e.g. scrap, product quality issues, too much variation, etc). The DMAIC-roadmap has a very logical and self-evident structure to tackle problems.  Crucial is that projects are carefully selected with a clear link to the business strategy.

There is often the idea that Six Sigma would require too much resources and time. This is a symptom that can have several causes. Some of them are : unclearly defined projects, insufficient Six Sigma expertise, lack of drive in the organization, or insufficient customer focus. These causes can be linked to a greater or lesser extent to the change management culture that is insufficiently in place. 

It is our positive experience that a Six Sigma project will deliver the desired results within the agreed timing, if well defined and sufficiently supported.
